Chumbe Island Coral Park Ltd (CHICOP) in Zanzibar/Tanzania is a not-for-profit enterprise established for the purpose of turning Chumbe Island and its coral reefs into a fully managed internationally recognized nature reserve. With this, CHICOP has from 1992 created the World’s first privately managed Marine park and the first one fully financed through ecotourism. The objectives of CHICOP are non-commercial, while operations follow commercial principles. In fact, the overall aim is nothing less but to create a model of sustainable park management, where ecotourism supports nature conservation, research, and awareness creation of local communities. Since 1998, the Environmental Education programs for local schools and communities have covered more than 12,000 islanders.
